WHEN A DISASTER HAPPENS, IT CAN BE DEVASTATING.
Jefferson County, Texas is no stranger to the impact of disaster. In 2017, the impact of Hurricane Harvey caused catastrophic flooding throughout our county, leaving thousands of households without basic necessities and many without a place to live while they recovered and repaired their flood-damaged homes. Of the 41 Texas counties receiving a Federal Disaster Declaration, Jefferson County, Texas was the 2nd most impacted county in the state.
Harvey changed the way Southeast Texans think about disaster. Harvey also started the change in the way Southeast Texans recover from disaster. Since Harvey's impact in 2017, Jefferson County has been impacted by multiple weather events and a canal breach flooding neighborhood houses in north Beaumont. Recovering from a disaster is a gradual process. Jefferson County Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) is the local, state and federally recognized Long Term Recovery Group serving Jefferson County, Texas. We are dedicated to doing our part in serving the Jefferson County before, during and after a disaster. We strive to educate, empower and assist everyone in preparing for and recovering from disaster, by providing relevant, clear and useful information that's helpful in storm preparation and recovery decision-making. We have a strong relationship with elected officials and local emergency management leaders at the county and city levels. We make sure our messaging is consistent and comes directly from these trusted decision-makers and sources.
We serve all households impacted by disaster, but strongly focus on the most vulnerable; uninsured elderly, indigent, disabled, US veterans, single parents with children, undocumented citizens, and first responders. Through a structured case management process, we identify unmet needs for the most vulnerable households impacted, and through a "whole community approach," help meet these needs so that individuals and families can return to a safe, sanitary and secure home. We partner with organizations that have a mission for disaster recovery and serving people - businesses, churches, congregations, local and national non-profit organizations, and other community partners. We understand that it takes many people and groups working together to restore a community after disaster. We want to connect impacted households to resources that can help with needs outside of our mission or scope. It's our desire to help impacted households recover faster and better.
